Picasso Exhibit - Albright Knox

Step 1: The Exhibition

Questions about the exhibit:

 1. What is the title of the exhibit?

Spotlight on the Collection

Artists in Depth: Picasso, Braque, Léger, Delaunay

2. What is the theme of the exhibition?

A complete display of all works in the Collection—more than seventy-five objects—by four masters: Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973), Georges Braque (French, 1882–1963), Fernand Léger (French, 1881–1955), and Sonia Delaunay (French, born Russia, 1885–1979).

I chose to concentrate on the exhibit of Picasso as I found it moving and fascinating.

Step 2: The Gallery

Questions about the physical space:

1. What type of lighting is used?

The normal overhead lighting was used along with some spot lights to accent pieces.

 2. What colors are used on the walls?

The color used on the walls was white.

 3. What materials are used in the interior architecture of the space?

They used 3 walls to separate the works so; you were standing in a space and walked along the 3 walls and around the corner to the next set.

 4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space?

As you enter the exhibit you walk down the first wall and along the back then up the third wall, and continue this around the corner to the next bay.

Step 3: The Artwork

Questions about the artwork:

 1. How are the artworks organized?

The Picasso exhibit started with early etchings, drawings that look like notebook sketches, to his Blue period which is somber, to the Rose Period which focused on circus performers, to his work in Cubism.

 2. How are the artrworks similar?

With Picasso’s exhibit, his sketches and water color were all frames similarly in a plain white frame almost looking like card stock; his paintings had a thicker more intricate frame.  Many of the sketches and water colors were of the same size or close to it.

 3. How are the artworks different?

The works were different because they showcased his sketches, drawings, water color, pen and ink, and paintings.  The type of framing was different depending on the medium he used for that work.

 4. How are the artworks framed?

The sketches, drawing and water color all had white frames, plain and simple. Some of his paintings were displayed in a real frame, which were not white.  That may be due to the paintings were on canvas and the rest on paper.

 5. How are the artworks identified and labeled?

They are identified and labeled with His name, Name of the work and date, the media used, and how they acquired the work.  In the upper right hand corner was Spanish, 1881-1973.  In addition some of his works had a description about the work.  These hung right next to the work.

 6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other?

They were spaced pretty evenly from each other.  I would say maybe a rulers length apart, maybe alittle less.

 Step 4: Art Criticism Exercise

Art Criticism: Describing, Analyzing, and Interpreting Artwork
Artist: Pablo Picasso ______________________________________________________________________________________
Title of work:   Cortege __________________________________________________________________________________
Media:  Watercolor and ink wash on paper _______________________________________________________________________

The photograph used in this blog was the one I took. __________________________________________________________
1.   Be receptive - Keep an open mind.  Look for what is good.  No put-downs allowed.
This painting made me smile.  It was very different from the other paintings and I found a hint of humor in it.  I liked that there was a hint of light color to contrast to the images.  I also found his use of water color and pen and ink together nice.  It is almost like Picasso paints things as he sees it, and he sees things in a wild way.  This work of art almost looks like a combination between a sketch and a comic.  It was interesting to see how different his style of paintings could be.
2.   Description – Describe what you see.  (subject matter)?
I see three figures of people joyfully dancing.  They seem very free.  The three figures are completely different; one is tiny, one is bigger and one average.

3.   Formal analysis – (form)  What principles and elements were used and how are they used?
He uses color to contrast and to create emphasis.  He uses lines in many directions to draw your eyes around the painting.  The differing heights and body styles show proportion.  And I feel a sense of motion by their stances.

4.  Bracketing - Is there anything in or about this work that reminds you of anything else? Do you see any symbols, metaphors, or allegories?  (iconography)
They remind me of funny dancers in a parade, or clowns but nude.

5.  Interpretation - (content)  What do you think the artist was trying to say?
I think he is trying to show the group as being free.  They look carefree dancing, nude, and being happy.  I think Picasso painted the drawing in a goofy crazy way to show this freedom.

The photograph used I took at the Albright Knox

1.   Be receptive - Keep an open mind.  Look for what is good.  No put-downs allow
2.   Description – Describe what you see.  (subject matter)?
I loved this work by Pablo Picasso.  When I look at the work, I can feel the emotion and the passion between these two people.  They are staring into one another’s eyes, like they are lost in each other.  I think it is a very intimate and emotional picture.  I think it is great that even without any color it still gives you so many feelings.  This is a very romantic piece of art.

3.   Formal analysis – (form)  What principles and elements were used and how are they used?
There is a contrast between the various shades of black, gray and white. I think this contrast gives it emphasis.  The size of the human figures shows proportion.  The lines produce emphasis, contrast and contour.  There is a sense of value within the varying shades of black, gray, and white. The contour lines give it more of a dimension and depth.

4.  Bracketing - Is there anything in or about this work that reminds you of anything else? Do you see any symbols, metaphors, or allegories?  (iconography)
It reminds me of a loving embrace.  A sneak peak at an intimate moment.

5.  Interpretation - (content)  What do you think the artist was trying to say?
I think he was trying to show the great emotion two people can have for one another.  They are looking deep into each others eyes and it helps you to feel the connection between them.

1.   Be receptive - Keep an open mind.  Look for what is good.  No put-downs allowed.

 2.   Description – Describe what you see.  (subject matter)?
It looks like people sitting on a beach with bright blue water in front of them.  It is possible that there
is a big ship in the water.  It is also possible that there is instead something in the sky.  It is hard to tell because the water and sky blend together.

3.   Formal analysis – (form)  What principles and elements were used and how are they used?
Color is used as a big accent in this piece.  The contrast of black, dark brown, and tan.  The contrast between bright blue, white and black.  The white lines draw your eyes attention to it.  The color also seems to create a depth  to the painting.  The white line give it a feel of movement.

4.  Bracketing - Is there anything in or about this work that reminds you of anything else? Do you see any symbols, metaphors, or allegories?  (iconography)
I do not see any symbols or metaphors.  It reminds me of peace and relaxation.

5.  Interpretation - (content)  What do you think the artist was trying to say?
I am not sure what Picasso is trying to say with this painting.  I feel a peaceful and calming feeling from this painting.  Maybe that was what he was trying to convey.

. Answer this question: What did you think of visiting the Gallery and purposefully looking at the exhibition from a different perspective - the physical space, the architecture, theme, etc.?

After taking this class I can appreciate many things about the art gallery other than just the paintings on the wall.  I realize how much work and planning goes into designing the space, the frames used, the color of the walls and the lighting.  When setting up an exhibit or an installation, they need to look at the way the people will move about the exhibit. Even the architecture of museums is aesthetically pleasing and is a work of art itself.  I am glad that I have this new found appreciation.

Mod 12 video review

Andy Warhol: Images of an Image

Hockney on Photography

Questions and Topics for Your Blog Posting:

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I selected the film Andy Warhol: Images of an Image because I was hoping to understand his work better.  I have seen his work and have never really liked it or understood the hype behind it.  I also selected Hockney on Photography because photography is an area that greatly interests me.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

I learned that Andy Warhol uses photographs, stencils, and screen printing to create his works.  The process of silk screening was pretty interesting to watch.  His work is more mechanical, and any of his staff could do it.  Death was one of his main themes along with Marilyn Monroe, Jacquie Kennedy, and Liz Taylor.

The film Hockney on Photography taught me that the camera came much before photography.  He takes photographs very close up and in sections, and then puts each picture together like a puzzle to create the entire scene.   The Polaroid collages are very cool looking with the lines of a grid.  He has an amazing passion for photography and went to great lengths to display things as they were seen, even if that meant standing on a ladder.  He also painted in somewhat of a grid pattern, as he used many individual canvases to create his final painting.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The films add more information about the topics that we are reading about in the textbook.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I found the film on Hockney to be amazing and interesting.  His work is something that could not be described in words alone.  By seeing the film and listening to him speak about his pieces and the passion he had really helps you to understand what he was trying to achieve and how he achieved it.  I find his work very fascinating and it is real.

The film on Andy Warhol gives more information about him and his work than the textbook.  It shows the process of silk screening which also has been talked about.  I still cannot understand why he was so popular and do not see his work as great.  He said in the film that many members of his staff could and did make these pieces.  I guess he is just going to be one artist that I do not understand.

Module 11 video Review

Matisse and Picasso

The Mystical North: Spanish Art from the 19th Century to the Present

Dada and Surrealism

Questions and Topics for Your Blog Posting:

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

The first film I selected was Matisse and Picasso.  I selected this film because I wanted to learn more about Picasso after seeing an exhibit of his at the Albright Knox.  The second film was The Mystical North: Spanish Art from the 19th Century to the Present.  I chose this film because I am also interested in the work of Goya.  I find his work and the story of his life interesting.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Matisse and Picasso-

They viewed drawing as painting but with fewer materials.  The two of them did not clash but instead had an exchange of ideas.  In 1912 Picasso invents the first collage.  Matisse sculpts like a painter. I learned that for a painter, anguish is a tool.  These two were brothers in anguish.  When Matisse could not paint anymore he cut paper to create his art.

The Mystical North-

I learned even more about Goya and his Black paintings, sketches and etchings.  His work is so interesting and full of emotion.  He went from painting colorful paintings to very dark and disturbing paintings after an illness.  I also learned about Gaudi and his mosaic style structures.  They are beautiful and original.  I was blown away seeing the apartment building that he built.  The ceilings had life to them, the floors were mosaic, the windows were different, the balconies were beautifully sculpted, as well as the chimneys and the roof.  This film also told about Picasso and that the Picasso museum was actually sculpted by him.

3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos add more in depth information about the artists that the book does not have space.  Being able to see multiple works of art by an artist helps to understand them even better.

4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

The films were very good, both were very informative.  They were able to give a better look at the life and works of the artists.  With Goya, it is like you can feel his depression through his work.  The textbook does a good job for providing basic information, but the films are able to concentrate on just a few things.  Being able to see the work of Gaudi, is something one could never fully appreciate just by reading about it.  The buildings are something that is better able to understand and get a feel for by seeing the video, it’s the next best thing to seeing it in person.

Module 10 blog- Mask Making

My Original Mask

1. Upload the three (3) inspiration images to your Blog (or link to your Photobucket account). Explain why you selected the inspiration pieces.

http://www.masksoftheworld.com/SoAmerica/Colombian%20Character%20Mask.htm
I chose this mask as inspiration because I really liked the use of color.  I knew I wanted to do something similar with color with my mask.  This is a Columbian character mask.  It is 9 inches and is made from painted wood.  The colors of this mask is what caught my eye, they are bold and contrasting.  The mask has some grooves in it which show texture.  I like the symmetry in details even though the colors are not in symmetry.

http://www.masksoftheworld.com/SoAmerica/Bolivia%20Mask%20Owl.htm
I chose this mask as inspiration because of the use of color and symmetry.  This is a Bolivian mask made by the Beni people, Bolivia, South America.  This mask is of an owl and is 9 inches made of painted wood.  The bright contrasting colors really catch my eye.  The use of lines in different ways to separate features. This also has nice symmetry.  Although it reminds me of a blue bird not an owl as it is meant to depict.

http://www.hickerphoto.com/photos/indian-mask.htm
I chose this mask as inspiration because I liked the use of  hair and they symmetry of the mask.  This is an Native American mask by Wally Bernard.  It is carved from red cedar, like most Native American masks and has cedar rope and bark tufts..  This mask depicts an owl as the owl represents the wise one and the messenger.  I see huge eyes that serve as the focal point and a short beak.  The yellow against the brown is contrasting in color.  Because it is carved of red cedar it gives it texture along with the cedar rope used.

2. Include the analysis and description (art criticism steps) of the three (3) inspiration pieces.

I included this in the descriptions under each image above.

3. Upload images of your sketchs and finished piece.

This is a close up of my sketch as it was harder to see in the other one.  I labeled many of the colors I planned to use so my sketch looks a bit sloppy.
This is a full view of my sketch with colors labeled so I could visualize how I would use the colors.

4. Explain how you used the Elements and Principles in your finished mask.

I used contrasting colors when I painted the mask and also with the yarn I used for hair.  I used cyan, magenta, and yellow paint and mixtures of those colors.  I used tan, white, brown, green, yellow and orange pieces of yarn of differing lengths to add an additional contrast but tried to create unity within all of the colors.  I also used a lace red ribbon around the neck of the mask for an added effect.  I tried to create some form of symmetry within the mask, even though much of it was atypical symmetry.  I also used some lines.  I also think the yarn give it the feel of texture along with the ribbon.

5. Share your opinion of your finished mask and what you thought about creating the mask.

I thought creating the mask was fun and interesting.  I did not turn out exactly as I hoped but it was fun.  I enjoyed creating and painting it.  I enjoy making things with my hands and I went for alternative materials than paper.  I used acrylic paints pure and mixed, a cut open milk jug ( one gallon), red lace ribbon, and various colors and lengths of yarn.  I used a gold bingo dabber to create circular figures on top of some of the dark colors. The use of the milk jug as a base also gives it form and a 3-dimenstional feel.

Video Review Module 10

Buddhism

African Art: Legacy of Oppression

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I selected to watch the video on Buddhism out of personal interest after reading about it in the textbook.  I chose the video on African Art: Legacy of Oppression out of interest also.  I took a history class a few semesters ago and we read the novel "King Leopold's Ghost" which they talk about in the film and that book was horrifying and moving.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

Buddhism split into two groups within a 100 years of Buddha's death; monks and the rest.  Buddha's death brought a flowering of Buddhist art and architecture.  I learned that every Stupa has a story to tell and that the sculptures and images on the outside are for the illiterate people.  Beyond this entry is the path to enlightenment and follows a circular path which must be walked in a clockwise direction.  Buddhism spread to Indonesia and there houses the largest Buddhist pyramid or stupa and is a Buddhist mecca.
The video about African Art: Legacy of Oppression was very interesting.  The Congo region has more than 250 cultures.  They beautifully design normal everyday objects and they are used as art and called magical.  The most magical object is the mask.  In a mask the color white is meant to represent health and black is used to represent sickness.  Some of the masks were used to scare or intimidate.  When I got to the part on King Leopold and what he had done to the people of the Congo brought back all that I had learned from a history class as mentioned earlier.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The videos add another level to the textbook readings.  It is helpful to be able to see the concepts from the textbook readings more in-depth.  Being able to see the narrator walking around the path on the stupa brought a much greater understanding.  In the video on African art it went into more detail about the masks and what their art was used for.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
Both film were very good.  I think the film on African Art: Legacy of Oppression should be a mandatory film.  It is important not only for art and culture, but also history.  Many people do not know that this existed and they should.  I think both films by showing the culture helps to gain a better understanding.  I now understand the concept of a stupa much better.  It also was nice to know the reasoning behind the art and what it is used for.

Line Drawing Project- subject hands

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?

It was interesting.  I felt like I should have done more shading but I could not make it look right no matter how many times I tried.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?

I used sketching pencils.  I tried with charcoal but it smudged quite a bit.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?

When drawing with my left hand, non-dominant hand it felt a bit uncomfortable at first.  It was difficult to try to get smaller details with my non-dominant hand.  But I felt the more I used it that it did get a little bit more comfortable.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?

The drawing with my dominant hand I believe looks more realistic than the one drawn with my left hand.  I thought the drawing with my left hand would have been a real disaster, but now that it is done it looks recognizable.  I think it was a successful study, as it taught me that even though using my non-dominate hand is difficult, it could be useful sometimes.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?

I would consider using it in small doses.  I am not sure I would want to use it for an entire drawing unless it lacked detail.

Video Review Module 9

Leonardo da Vinci: The Mind of the Renaissance

Albrecht Dürer: Image of a Master

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.

I selected the film about Leonardo da Vinci because I wanted to learn more about his life, and I am glad that I did so.  I chose the film Albrecht Durer: Image of a Master because he was mentioned quite a few times in our textbook and want to learn more about him.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

While watching the film about Leonardo da Vinci’s life I learned many things about him I did not previously know.  He believed motion was made up of two things: spiritual and material.  He studied machines and was an incredible innovator.  That his apprentice believed students should be trained in all forms of art so they were well rounded.  I loved seeing his sketches and seeing how they were precisely measured and mapped out.  He believed a painting held 10 attributes of sight.  He was the first one to dissect the human body and study it as an artist.  The amount of inventions he sketched out was massive.

Albrecht Durer enjoyed painting hands.  He was extremely skilled in making woodcuts and made money selling them to travel.  He was the first true landscape artist, but also was an amazing painter of portraits.  He did a lot of work on perspective just as da Vinci did.  He used a grid to make things to the correct scale.  He was also a print maker and could make many prints.  His experience in this led to engraving cooper.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

I read about both of these men in our textbook and the videos expand upon the readings.  It gives us a different look at the artists.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

I thought the films were good, especially the one on Leonardo da Vinci’s life.  The textbook gives an brief overview of the artists and talk about their big contributions to art.  The videos get into a much greater detail and add to the contributions described in the textbooks.  I learned a lot of information from watching the videos that I would not have known had I only read the textbook.

Module 8 video review

More Human Than Human

Cairo Museum

1. Explain why you selected each of the two videos you choose from the selection listed above.

The first video was a required video assigned for the class to watch.  I watched most of the other videos listed and found the video on the Cairo Museum to be of interest.

2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

This video I learned how the human body has been sculpted and portrayed over the years has went through many changes.  It ranged from simple, unrealistic body styles, realistic, detailed body styles.  What I found interesting is that unrealistic body styles have come back into style.  We are constantly trying to make our bodies perfect; we are now using Photoshop to edit out our imperfections. I liked how they described how a sculptor puts a body in motion by showing the different planes of the body.

In the video on the Cairo Museum I found it interesting that they had so many items in the basement that were not displayed.  It was like a huge room of hidden treasures.  I also learned where some of these artifacts were found and how it was discovered.  A man using a tripod documenting a trip discovered a large tomb when his one tripod leg sunk into the sand exposing a hollow spot.  This led to some wonderful discoveries.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos get more in depth to the information given in the textbook readings.  It is nice to see some of the things that we read about shown on video so it can increase our understanding of the concepts.  The textbook gives the basic information and terms and the videos build on it.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?

The films definitely add more depth to the readings from the textbook.  It brings the concepts to life.  The videos give a better understanding of the topics by illustrating them better than just words of a photograph.  These two videos were good and I believe were helpful.

Module 7 Arctechture

Prairie Style (Frank Lloyd Wright)

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

I had never heard of a Prairie style house before.  It was the first style to let the rooms flow together instead of being a series of separated rooms.  They have a natural appearance and he called them organic because they were designed as if they grew out of the land.  The front door is not centered as many homes today are.  He moved the fireplace to the center of the room to open the outer wall up for a wall of windows.  He planned the positioning of the house and the windows so that the house would follow the sun around to ensure the best natural light.  These windows created panoramic views. He also does not use basements in his homes. All of these things make for an amazing concept.  I really like the front door being so unique in not only placement but with coverings to add interest.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The textbook does have a special section to feature about Frank Lloyd Wright and his creation of the Prairie houses, but this video really is what makes you appreciate his work.  The textbook gives information about his life, education, and even marriages; it does give a brief description of what the prairie house style is but the video does a much better job.  It shows several examples and gives a great description about his intentions for this style.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?
This film was amazing.  I am in love with the Prairie style homes.  I think this concept was something that having a visual tour of these homes added much depth and a much better understanding of his creation.  I also enjoyed that it showed the work of Ron Thom who was deeply inspired by Wright.  His style of homes was also very amazing.  I love the creation of levels even though they are only separated at times by a few steps; I think it adds great character.  The floor to ceiling wall of windows as an exterior wall is exceptional.  The other thing that stood out with Thom’s style was the amount of built-ins, I just loved that.  He felt it made the room or home practical but beautiful, using space in the best way possible.  The ceiling heights differing in the home from low to high made for beautiful ceilings.
4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?

This was my favorite of all of the videos.  I absolutely love Frank Lloyd Wright’s design of the Prairie house style.  I realize this was a completely new design for that time period and that others have made adaptions from his style, but I found it amazing.  As I was watching the film all I kept thinking about was that if I was ever to have a house built I would want a Prairie Style house.

Architecture: The Science of Design

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

I learned many things from this video.  Skyscrapers are steel structures that are riveted together.  The two parts of a skyscraper are: the superstructure, the part that stands above ground and the substructure the part that is deep underground and has to support all the weight.  I also had no idea that the wind made the building sway so much.  I thought the wind tunnel testing was interesting to test what effects wind or snow would have on the building and the area around it.  My favorite part was about the smart apartment.  That shows some amazing innovation, especially the alarm clock feature.  I also learned that a hopper is used to pour concrete underwater.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

I think this video relates to the textbook readings by showing how architecture has really evolved.  It shows that even though concrete has been used since antiquity that even it has been innovated by reinforcing it with steel bars, or using pre-stressed concrete.  It shows how the concepts that have been used for centuries have been experimented with and new techniques and concepts have been created.  It made me realize how much work has went into creating materials that we take for granted and that we use regularly.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture?

I thought this film was very good and informative.  The films give depth to the textbook readings by showing the concepts and techniques being used.  There are some concepts that are easier to understand if you can see it rather than just reading the words.  The readings give us the concepts and get us familiar with the terminology and the films build from that.

4. Why did you choose the films that you watched?

I actually watched all of the videos listed, but I chose this one because it was one of the two I found most interesting.  I learned many things that I did not already know about skyscrapers and wind tunnel testing.  Learning about how they sway and the ways that they control that.  Also, the section on the smart apartment was fascinating.  I think that having all of those forms of technology controlling a person’s home is great, and the fact that it is energy saving also makes it even better.
