Module 6 Peer review

These are the two classmates blogs that I chose to peer review:

http://kubikbblog.blogspot.com/

http://gracesplanetworld.blogspot.com/

2. When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?

I feel that both classmates photographs demonstrated the elements and principles in the correct ways.  It was very interesting seeing the different ways each classmate portrayed each element and principle.  In Brian's (blog 1) photograph for shape I can see a few different ways that shape could be used as I described in my comment to him.  The entire picture demonstrates shape, the top opening of the dome, and the circle (bubbles) on the wall all could demonstrate shape.  I believe this same photograph also could demonstrate texture.
3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?
In Grace's (blog 2) blog we both chose Gustave Courbet's La Source de la Loue as one of our works.  Our reasons for selecting I believe were similar.  We both wondered what was within the cave or what was at the end of the cave.  We both found their to be a bit of mystery to the work.  That was the only work of art that I had in common with either classmate.

4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?

In Brian's images I was actually intrigued by all of them.  In particular though, I shared his wonder about Untitled (Branches over Stream) by Charlotte Spalding Albright.  It is a painting that I wish came with more explanation.  I would just like to know what inspired it or what it means.
In Grace's images I found them to be interesting also.  In particular was Tauba Auerbach which is an untitled piece.  I love that the canvas looks wrinkled and the effect that has on the paint and color.  It made me wonder how it was created?  Was it made on a piece of unstretched canvas that had purposely been wrinkled then painted and then stretched?  I also wondered what inspired him of creating this piece?
5. What do you think about  the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?
I think reading my classmates peer review comments on my work was helpful.  It helped me to feel like I am understanding the material and moving in the right direction.  I do think it is helpful in my learning.  Feedback is always a good thing.
6. Check your Blog and read comments posted by your Peers. Do you find their comments helpful?

I did find their comments helpful.  I am glad that some of the things I was trying to portray in my elements and principles project were seen by my classmates.  It is nice to receive feedback on projects.

Video Review Module 6

Through the Eyes of  a Sculptor

 1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
I learned about the quarries and how the stones are harvested.  I found that to be interesting.  Also how each kind of stone has a different smell and that the inside of the quarry is 12 degrees Celsius all year round.  Limestone when it is removed from the wall of the quarry is wet and can be cut with a chainsaw with ease; easier than wood.  The restoration of existing works is a complex process.  I also learned that most sculptures are not achieved by the work of just one person, it takes a team of people who work on the area that they specialize in.  The marble mountains in Italy are beautiful and seeing the process of how the marble was transported down the mountain many years ago was interesting.  Lastly, the video shows that creating a sculpture is a long process in which many steps must be completed.

 2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The readings in the text teach the basic understanding of the terms and material that are used when creating a sculpture.  But the video really brings what we read in the textbook to life.  You can see where the stones come from and the different steps of sculpting.  I think they compliment each other well and the video deepens the understanding.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?
I thought the video was good.  They added depth to my understanding of the topics by showing the process of creating a sculpture.  I had not realized that a work went through that many steps or that a team of people worked on the sculpture.  I thought that one person completed the work.  To see how each person used their area of specialty to the work was great.  I also think that the film showing where the stones came from and teaching about the stones was useful.

Glass and Ceramics

 1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
I learned quite a bit from the parts of the video about glass.  I did not know that glass is made from sand and that it is not a true solid.  The video showed how glass has been used more and more in architecture. Because of innovation glass now can be shatter proof, sound reducing, energy saving and has beautiful reflective properties.  I have always been very interested in the art of glassblowing and its delicate practice.  Staind glass is beautiful and I enjoyed seeing this process.  I was already very familiar with ceramics and the process of creating it.  I spent a lot of time in my grandmothers ceramics shop and watch the process from start to finish. I can say that I now have a whole new appreciation for what she did.  The thing I did learn about ceramics is how they are being used medically for uses such as hip replacements, and also the use of ceramics in automobiles.

2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
I think this video was beneficial to understanding the concepts from the textbook.  By showing the process of how glass is made it helps to put the knowledge learned in the reading into perspective.  I like that the reading lays the basic foundations of the material and then the video adds another layer of information and learning.

3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?
The film was good, I think it is important to see the processes in action and how each step is done.  It makes you appreciate the work that goes into making a pane of glass.  Seeing how staind glass is made and how a design is sketched out and then the pieces are cut and numbered and reassembled and as we learned from the textbook sometimes its joined together by pieces of lead creating leaded stained glass.

Installation Art

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
From the video I learned that installation art is something that is all around you.  It is 3-dimensional artwork and that the work is site specific.  So the piece is designed especially for the spot allotted for it and will only work in that spot.  I also learned that is the relationship between image, space, and individual.
2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
Like with the other videos, I believe that after reading the textbook readings, the video helps to bring it altogether.  It helps to get a better understanding of the terms and topics.  I personally do not understand most installation art.
3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft?
The film was helpful to me to understand installation art a little bit better.  In a few of the examples the video used to show installation art, I could see the art value in, but some I could not.  The film helped me to see how much work and planning must go into an installation piece by the artist and the gallery.

Questions:
A.) Which artworks make an impact or impression on me? Why?
The work of art that made the biggest impression on me was that of SOL Lewitt.  Walking up the staircase and seeing his work directly on the wall was amazing.  It really catches your eye and I just stood there in awe.  Then when I read about the creation of this work and how it covers more than 2,200 square feet of wall surface and that it took nine weeks.  A crew of 16 people scribbled for 7 hours a day for 54 days.  It took a total of 5,026 hours and 1,717 pencil leads were used.

The work of Robert Delaunay was beautiful.  It has amazing color and styling to it.  It is a painting that you can stare at for quite awhile just looking at all of the different thing going on.  There is an incredible energy that comes from this painting.

B.) Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?

The works of art I felt a connection with was Salvador Dali and Vincent Van Gogh.  It was a great feeling standing in front of two paintings by some of the most famous painters.  Painters and works of art that I had been learning about since I was young in art classes.  Being so close to them and thinking about their creators made me feel more a part of the world of art.  Both were beautiful.  Salvador Dali's painting however has a beauty that is hard to photograph or even to see in a photograph.  I felt that it was much different in person, seeing the colors and reflections.  It does look transparent.

C.) Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?

The two works of art that I would like to learn more about are the work of Fred Tomaselli and Gustave Courbet.  I was intrigued by all of the mediums used by Fred Tomaselli; leaves, pills, photo collage, acrylic and resin on wood panel.  He used some unconventional mediums which sparked my interests.  It looked layered like it had some depth and beautiful coloring and shape.  Just by looking at it you can tell that he uses a labor intensive technique to create his work.
The painting by Gustave Courbet looked intriguing.  It made you feel like you were about to float into the cave or tunnel.  It was a beautiful painting.  There is something very mysterious about it.  I love real landscape works and this one makes you feel like you are underground.

You should list at least two different artworks for each question. (Total of 6)

Logo About Me

Brain Storming of Ideas
Brain Storming #2
Brain Storming #3
Logo Idea 1
Final Logo Design

1. Discuss what you thought about creating your logo.

I thought that creating my logo was fun.  I had two different ideas and I shared both of them.  I used pencil and colored pencils, but now I wish I would have used paints so that the colors would have been brighter.  I think the colored pencils dulled the colors in the photograph.

2. Describe the process: creative thinking skills and ideas you used in the logo creation.

With my creative thinking skills I tried to brainstorm about what makes me who I am.  The first design I went with my identity as a mother and used that work to express other things about myself all inside of a heart.  But then as I took more time and thought about it, I came up with a different direction.  This one was more simplistic but has a deeper meaning.  It is meant to show myself and my life moving forward and accomplishing great things.

3. What was the most important discovery you made in the creation of your logo?

I think the most important discovery I made was that firstly it it harder to make a logo about yourself than for a product.  The second thing was that the more I thought about it the more ideas I had and that my entire idea changed in a much different direction.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos, powerpoint, and reading material  for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?

I thought that the videos were very interesting.  There is a lot of work and planning and redesigning that goes into creating a logo or changing a brand.  I liked the video on making the squeeze jars, that they kept working til they got it as close to perfect as possible.  I took an advertising class in the past and find all of that fascinating.  Graphic designers have a tough job.  They not only have to brainstorm different ideas, but they ultimately have to please their customer.  Graphic design is not as easy as it may appear and takes a great amount of patience to get everything just right.

Value Scale and Color Wheel Project

Color Wheel

Value Scale

1. Discuss what you thought about creating the Value Scale and Color Wheel.
I thought it was fun to create the color wheel and value scale.  I enjoyed painting and mixing the colors together.  I liked that we used magenta, yellow, and cyan to create green, red and blue.  Instead of using the normal yellow, red and blue.  It shows that every color will create a different color combination and depending on the amount of each color mixed will provide a different shade.
The value scale was a bit more difficult due to trying to make each shade slightly lighter than the shade previous.  It was good practice for shading techniques.

2. Which media did you enjoy working with the best and why?
I enjoyed working with the paints the best.  Paint is interesting to me because you can create almost any shade or color that you want just by playing with the color combination and amount of each color.  It has been many years since I have painted and now that I have picked up a brush again I intend to do more.  I find it relaxing and fun.

3. What was the most important discovery in the creation of these studies?
In the creations of these studies I discovered that whether I was using pencils, charcoals, or paints it is possible to create different shades of a color.

4. What is the most important information you learned from watching the videos for this project? What is your opinion of the videos?
The videos were good.  They help to give a better understanding of the textbook readings.  By seeing things being created it helps to steer you in the right path for your own project.  The most important things I learned were about the graphite pencils and how they should be used and sharpened.  The video on the color wheel was important to show the true primary colors.  I think this is important because our whole lives we were taught the primary colors were red, yellow, and blue.  It is important to see how they combined to make these same colors.

Elements of Art Project

http://s1289.photobucket.com/user/julieml78/library/Elements%20of%20Art%20Project?sort=4&page=1

The process of capturing photo's of the elements was fun.  I have always loved photography and I know look at it in a different way.  I started playing with the different options and menus for the first time.  I also found that I was looking at the way I took pictures differently.  I took a lot of different pictures and I believe I picked the best ones to display each element.  The part of this process that was a bit frustrating was using Photobucket.  It took many tries to get the text to save to my pictures.  It was my first time using the website so I am sure it will become more familiar.  I also could not get the links to work in Photobucket, so I hope that my links are what they are supposed to be.
I plan to use the techniques of the elements of art more often when taking pictures.  Photography was always a subject I wanted to learn more about.

Color and It's Effects on Emotion

1. Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.

Color is a component of light.  Light is refracted into different colors.  It is said to be the visual element that gives us the most pleasure.  Emotional responses to color are intense, personal and has cultural associations.  There are two different color systems: additive color which deals with mixing light and subtractive color which uses dyes and pigments.  The primary colors are red, blue and yellow.  These colors can be mixed to create different colors, hues and shades.  Hue, intensity and value are the three properties that describe our perception of color.  Also by using different color schemes an artist can create different emotional feelings within their work.  The color schemes are: monochromatic, analogous, complementary, split-complementary,  triadic, and tetrad.  Using a color scheme and changing the values and intensities of the colors effect the emotional response in a dramatic way.
We have a complex response emotionally to colors and it is not something that can be put into a set of rules to follow.  The meaning and emotion of a work can be changed by using a different arrangement of colors.  By using warm and cool colors it can change the spatial characteristics within their work.  Warm colors can make it seem as the picture plane is advancing and cool colors work in the opposite way.  The color temperature of a work has a direct impact and can trigger memories or our association with things.  Colors can also be used to set a mood or to convey something symbolic.  A color can have conflicting meanings so must know know the context of a work to understand what emotion the colors are portraying.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?

I find the discovery of Sir Isaac Newton to be fascinating.  How he was able to see that a ray of sunlight shining through a prism refracted into different colors that corresponded with the colors of the rainbow.  Then by placing a second prism he could recombine all of the colors into white light.  The idea that no object actually possess a color is amazing and kind of mind blowing.
I also find it interesting that every color can be made from the primary colors of red, blue and yellow or a combination of them.  The color wheel was constructed from Newton's discovery.

3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

In the video Color, I thought the point that made the biggest impact on me was that painters harness the power of color and the powerful and unpredictable emotions that colors create.  By layering colors it changes its tones and shades which create then different emotional responses.  When color is used to create shadows it makes it look more realistic to what you would see in real life.

4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?
The video about feelings was very interesting and showed the contrasting work of Goya and Da vid.  Art gives you the emotion and feelings that reading a history book cannot.  Goya shows us the darkness and seriousness and the feelings of what is the worst of us.  In comparison da vide gives us the feeling of nobility and the desire to be better.  They both show a change from faith to reason.  Faith is a more structured mind set where reason allows us to be free and have personal feelings and opinions about.  Their work gives humanity its own sense of power.  The techniques that they used intensified the stories so that people could identify with them and this created intense emotion.
